If your child has been told they need a scoliosis brace, you have probably pictured the rigid plastic shell. That is the standard. It is not the only option, and for a lot of patients it is not the best one.
The problem with rigid bracing
A hard-shell brace works by immobilizing. It holds the spine in a corrected position by preventing movement.
The trouble is what happens to muscle that is not allowed to work. Studies have shown that rigid bracing causes muscle weakness and eventual curve progression in the majority of cases. You have stabilized the curve at the cost of weakening the very structures that have to hold the correction once the brace comes off.
How SpineCor works differently
SpineCor is the only flexible, dynamic bracing system in use anywhere in the world today.
Instead of locking the spine in place, it applies corrective forces through elastic bands while allowing normal movement. It balances and strengthens the spinal musculature, optimizes how load passes through the spine, and retrains neurological feedback.
That last part is the whole idea. The brace is not forcing the spine straighter. It is retraining the brain to activate the muscles the body needs in order to correct itself. The correction becomes something the patient’s own system learns to produce.
Where it comes from
SpineCor was developed with the support of the Canadian government by two renowned orthopedic surgeons, specifically to help children avoid scoliosis surgery.
It now carries a 20-year track record in the scientific literature, has been used in at least 20 countries for well over 10,000 patients, and is fitted by chiropractors, orthopedists and other providers.
It is not only for kids anymore
The brace has been adapted for adults to provide pain relief and support. Adult studies have shown 90% of adult patients report pain relief within the first 6 weeks.
That matters because adult scoliosis is its own problem. Research shows adult curves can progress 1 to 2 degrees per year through abnormal spinal motion, asymmetrical joint loading and muscle imbalance. For adults the goal shifts: keep the spine functional and halt progression, with curve reduction as a welcome bonus rather than the primary target.
The certification part
Dr. Joe Coffman is the only doctor in South Florida certified to provide SpineCor, certified through Scoliosis Specialists, and has been fitting it since 2009.
That is not a marketing line. It is a logistical fact worth knowing, because the nearest certified alternative is not in this region.
