Your smoke alarm goes off. You have two options. Pull the battery, or find out what is burning.

Nobody would seriously choose the battery. Yet that is more or less the default approach to physical symptoms, and it is why so many people spend years managing the same problem.

What we mean by Secondary Conditions

At Vivify, we do not call your symptoms “the condition.” We call them Secondary Conditions, because they are secondary to something else.

The headache, the stiff neck, the tingling hand, the back that seizes when you reach for something on the floor. These are your body’s alarm system, trying to alert you to a more serious problem sitting just under the surface.

Treat the alarm and the alarm goes quiet. The fire keeps burning.

The three ways dysfunction becomes a symptom

Symptoms tend to be the late stage of a process, not the beginning of one. Three main mechanisms turn quiet dysfunction into something you actually feel:

  1. Structural shifts – the spine moves out of its normal structural range
  2. Loss of normal spinal motion – segments stop moving the way they should
  3. Neurological imbalance – the nervous system’s signalling is disrupted

Any of these can run for a long time before producing pain. That is not a comforting thought, but it is a useful one, because it means all three are measurable before you are symptomatic.

Why we measure against a normal range

Nobody is perfect, and neurological and structural testing always varies. We are not looking for textbook.

We are looking for a normal range, in the same way medicine has a normal range for blood pressure, or expects body temperature to sit close to 98.6. Most areas of healthcare use established norms to assess function. Your car does the same thing with gauges and warning lights.

We use a set of neurological and structural indicators to know when something is not functioning as it should and is heading toward secondary conditions, even before pain appears.

Why this is the cheaper path

Getting at the root cause instead of covering the effect means you stop paying repeatedly to address the same secondary conditions with progressively more expensive interventions.

The body is a self-healing, self-regulating organism, provided it can recognize and respond appropriately. Our primary job is to evaluate the dysfunction that impairs those inborn abilities, so the body has the best chance of functioning at its highest potential.

If you have been managing the same symptom for years

That is the pattern worth investigating. Not because you are doing something wrong, but because a symptom that keeps returning is telling you something nobody has addressed yet.
